At the end of Ben and Kirsty Carlson’s two-year project to support Burundian coffee farmers, they realised they had only benefited the roasters.
Fortunately, they didn’t give up. Instead, they invested in Burundi by opening a washing mill, and began the long task of improving cup profiles, creating direct trade relationships, and making coffee production sustainable in one of the world’s poorest countries (IMF, World Bank).
They discovered first-hand the difficulties of making coffee production sustainable. Watch Ben explain their story, and how they managed to make a difference.
